Research

Professor Wilkinson is a theoretical physicist who tackles model problems using a mixture of analytical calculations and numerical experiments.

Most of his interests are in quantum mechanics and condensed matter physics. Professor Wilkinson's best known work involves applications of random matrix and semiclassical methods to the dynamics of complex quantum systems, and renormalisation group analysis for Bloch electrons in a magnetic feld.

He was awarded the Maxwell  medal of the Institute of Physics in 1997 for work on the latter area. He has also contributed to semiclassical theories for tunnelling and matrix element statistics, the response of small metal particles to electromagnetic elds, and to exciton spectroscopy.

Professor Wilkinson's publications are listed on his personal website
